News from the Capitol
This year, the Legislature and Governor approved a balanced, on-time budget that makes historic, progressive investments in public education, the environment, healthcare, infrastructure and public safety. The budget also includes a record $9.9 billion reserve and Rainy Day Fund to responsibly prepare for an unforeseen economic downturn.
Budget highlights include:
Sacramento Budget Wins
Tip O'Neill, former United States Speaker of the House, said, “All politics is local.” I am proud to share with you the significant wins in this year's budget for the local Sacramento area, including:
- $1 million to enhance and protect the Lower American River Conservancy
- $2 million to develop the B Street Theatre by expanding educational programs and becoming LEED certified
- $10 million to support the needs of refugee students in Sacramento
- $14 million for designs for new Superior Courthouse in Sacramento

Degrees Not Debt Wins
Every California student deserves the right to pursue higher education without the burden of crippling debt. I am proud to have partnered with Speaker Rendon and other members of the California State Assembly to achieve the follow wins for college students:
- Protected the Middle Class Scholarship
- Expanded the Success Grants for Community College
- Improve access to College Savings Accounts for lower income students

2017-2018 Legislative Priorities

Legislative Town Hall
Last month, I was proud to host a Legislative Town Hall. Community members came from all over Sacramento to ask questions about state legislation and highlights from the 2017-2018 Budget.
Truitt Bark Park
I had a great morning with Esme (pictured bottom, right) at the grand opening of the Truitt Bark Park! The fenced-in park - which also includes a public plaza and community garden - is named after civic watchdog and longtime midtown activist Brooks Truitt.
National Night Out
On Tuesday, August 1st, my staff and I had the opportunity to visit neighborhoods all over Sacramento to celebrate National Night Out. “NNO” builds relationships between community members, law enforcement, and elected officials to make our neighborhoods safer and, well, more neighborly!
