Assemblymember Kevin McCarty Releases Statement on Governor Brown’s 2018-19 Proposed Budget

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Assemblymember Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento), Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance released the following statement in response to Governor Jerry Brown’s proposed 2018-19 state budget.

“Governor Jerry Brown’s final budget proposal embodies what has made him one of our state’s most successful governors in history – his fiscally prudent budget saves for a rainy day and makes historic investments needed to make us the most prosperous state in the nation.

The Governor’s proposed budget is a good starting point to make needed investments in public education - from early childhood education, K-12 schools to higher education. I am especially encouraged by his proposals to expand pre-K programs, fully fund the Local Control Funding Formula and support career technical education. The Governor also makes good on his commitment to make the first year of community college free for all California students. This is a huge win for students and our economy.

There are areas of the budget that the Legislature should fight for including increasing childcare and Early Childhood Education programs to help give our kids a head start and needed after school programs to help parents and students succeed. We also need to fight to increase UC and CSU student financial aid to help more California students access higher education and help the Golden State remain globally competitive for generations to come.

“As Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance, I look forward to working with my legislative colleagues and the Governor to pass an on-time, balanced budget that will fulfill California’s promise of creating a world class educational system that gives all students the tools they need to succeed.”

Governor Brown’s $190.3 billion budget includes $131.7 billion in general fund spending and a rainy day reserve of $13.5 billion. A summary of Governor Brown’s full budget proposal can be viewed here: www.ebudget.ca.gov
